Stainless steel safety sensor with protection class IP 69K - CSS 30S
With the CSS technology, the Schmersal Group has developed an innovative operating principle for non-contact safety sensors, which enables, amongst other things, the series-wiring of maximum 31 sensors through intelligent communication and diagnostic possibilities without detriment to the safety category. The advantages of this technology now are also available to hygiene-critical domains.

At Motek, Schmersal presents the CSS 30S, a cylindrical safety sensor with protection class IP69K. This means that the sensor can be pressurized from all sides with a high pressure cleaner or a hot steam cleaner without any damage occurring or his function being affected.

The sensor enclosure is absolutely closed “tight”. The M30 threaded tube is solidly milled and the active front faces of sensor and actuator are also integrated in the enclosure in stainless steel 1.4404. This provides the system with a high mechanical resistance to corrosion and chemical agents, which can be found for instance in aggressive cleaning agents. The sensor is connected through an integrated 8-pole M12 connector, which also meets the requirements of protection class IP69K.

Due to these features, the CSS 30S can be used in many domains of the food-processing industry as well as in the chemical and the pharmaceutical industry and even anywhere, where stringent hygienic requirements have to be met. The high mechanical resistance and the resistance to vibrations, which is guaranteed by the non-contacting microprocessor technology, extend the range of application of the sensor.

If required, the sensor can also be fitted behind safety guards and covers in plastic or in austenitic stainless steel, due to its large switching distance. As the sensor tolerates an axial misalignment of approximately 9 mm, he initially remains active in the event of sagging of a safety guard. Multifunction LED’s provide for a smooth and simple on-site diagnostics; diagnostic messages emit a warning on an approaching shutdown. This increases the availability of the plant.

The CSS 30S is suitable for use up to SIL 3 applications to IEC 61508 or PL e to EN ISO 13849 and control category 4 to EN 954-1, even if multiple sensors are wired in series. The other safety features include an integrated cross-wire short and external voltage monitoring of the safety outputs. For the signal evaluation, Schmersal offers a large programme of safety-monitoring modules and safety controllers.

The CSS technology furthermore makes detailed diagnostic-relevant information available, which can be used for fast fault localization or for statistic evaluations. For a smooth transmission of these data, a variant of the CSS 30S with serial diagnostic interface for connection to Profibus DP is available.
