Frank Schmidt, Director of Standards (Committee and Association Work) from Schmersal, will give a talk on "Machine safety through movable separating protective devices" on 24th September, 2013 at the User Get-Together + Expo for Machine Safety Würzburg. Frank Schmidt will explain the standard ISO 14 119 and which changes the mechanical engineers will be faced with. As with moving protective devices the physical barrier between people and dangerous machine movements has been explained in the standard ISO 14119, though normative rules for reliable monitoring must be observed. A locking device ensures that dangerous machine movements cannot be executed when the movable protective device is open. This output can, for example, be assumed by position switches, proximity switches or interlocking devices. However, when locking devices are used, not only the normative, but also technical and ecological aspects and the possible tampering with protective devices should be taken into account .The new standard is primarily intended to concern the selection of locking devices, however it will help mechanical engineers with their design and evaluation when a protective device is to be installed.
